Kampung Pelangi is inspiring on a few levels: first, it shows how, with paint, willpower, and creativity, a whole community was able to add colour literally to its surroundings; second, unlike some kampungs in Indonesia that can be a little depressing due to the amount of garbage in their lanes, this one, as other kampungs in Semarang, is litter free.
While it does not mean that inhabitants' lives are more joyous or easier, they live with dignity in a clean and neat environment. The photo potential is great here, because, yes, there are many colours, but there are also many beautiful plants cultivated in many nooks and crannies. Most people would assume there's not much to see in Semarang, Indonesia but that's wrong.
We did a private tour for very little money. Visited many sights including Kampung Pelani Rainbow village Watched the local people at work with their handicrafts. Very interesting. Indonesians are generally very friendly and we felt safe. Rainbow village is interesting and well-maintained, despite it being an area where the poor reside.

Very hilly. This village is set on a very steep hill and I would not recommend it for anyone with mobility issues. It's obviously a poor area that has been revamped by painting the houses in lots of bright colours. The people and we only met a handful during a 1 hour walk are incredibly friendly and happy to greet you with a friendly smile.
