One of the most pleasurable hotel experiences I have ever had. The hotel is not a luxury hotel and after hearing about it for years, I confess I was a bit disappointed when we arrived, as the general architecture of the building itself is not very unusual or interesting.

But that's before we started to notice all the antiques and unusual design touches throughout the place, which made walking around the hotel like a mystery tour when you were never sure what hidden room or special sculpture you'd see next.

But the key to the hotel is really the staff - absolutely incredible personal service. Never obsequious or obtrusive, every single staff person made every effort to make sure we were getting the most out of our trip - acting always as if they were genuinely interested in talking to us and helping us do what we wanted to do.

In this regard, they organized a wonderful guide for our day trip to Mt. Bromo, and found us great drivers the other days we wanted to take trips around town. The best way to describe it was that it was like staying in a private club where you go back year after year - in this case though, the staff had never seen us before but still made us feel so welcome.

The activities the hotel organizes itself are also very worthwhile - the bike tour and the cooking lesson are the ones we did. There is a small pool, but we did not swim. We did use the spa, which was also a great experience. We ate at the restaurant for almost every meal - the menu was varied and good. Service could be slow when they were very full, as seemed to happen on the weekend. The bar area was also fun, and the small cafe on the side where they served delicious cakes really moist! The part my family liked best though was the afternoon tea, where the hotel provided tea and coffee and a range of Javanese cakes and other treats - a wonderful way to slow down at the end of the day.

We were sad to leave, even knowing we were off to Bali next. I would love to go back. Dear bpym, Thank you so much for your great comments at Tripadvisor. Beautiful rooms and lovely little pool. The food is excellent and beautifully presented. And the cocktails are delicious!

And afternoon tea is a must - lovely little cakes and excellent coffee! Take the art tour the hotel offers if you have the time. It will give you a good insight into Java's history. Dear Sybille M, Thank you so much for your great comments at Tripadvisor. The hotel restaurant is decent, not superb, but the menu has enough good options although IMHO a page menu is normally a red flag. Don't forget the traditional tea time around 4pm! If we can help you with anything, please feel free to contact me directly at crescentia tuguhotels. Warmest regards, Crescentia Harividyanti. We travelled west to east across Java in August and I picked this hotel based on its website and then reviews on Trip Advisor. We booked 3 nights and when we arrived they had upgraded us to a larger room which was a pleasant surprise.

This was the best hotel we stayed at on our 18 day trip. The hotel is very unusual in that it is described as a museum as you can have a 2 hour guided tour around the collection of paintings, furniture and other antiques that are located mainly in various rooms on the ground floor and some on the upper floor. The ground floor area is quite deceptive as there are several rooms that are used for private functions and then you can walk through a long corridor which takes you into a large courtyard which reminds me of a filmset from an Indiana Jones movie.

It all looks quite bizarre at times but makes for a very unusual interior. Our room was beautiful with a bathroom with a large circular bath tub made in the form of gunmetal with the shower above. The four poster bed was unusually high off the ground almost feeling that you needed steps to get onto it. Breakfast and other meals are in a dining area next to the pool. The staff were all wonderful, plus they provide free tea and cakes between 4pm and 6 pm every day.

I was particularly impressed with Rani who kept me entertained while I had dinner one evening alone in the restaurant. I did the sunrise trip to Mount Bromo from Malang and the hotel gave me a lovely breakfast box made of reed which when the mixed group I travelled with for the Mount Bromo trip who were staying in other hotels were quite jealous of the tour operator I used Bromo Tours provided breakfast anyway. Although this was the most expensive hotel we booked on our trip across Java, it was well worth the price for such a pleasant place to stay for 3 days.

I can only give it an Excellent rating and would love to stay here again given the chance. Definitely a boutique style hotel.
