You will be so relax in such a nice place. People are not hurry and you can enjoy good food with a reasonable price. One disappointing thing about Kaohsiung is there is very little information in English which makes getting to attractions very difficult if you need to get off the train then onto a bus. We tried to see some temples got as far as the train station MRT and from there no one could help including the information center and the bus drivers all said we don;t go there.
A major attraction outside Kaohsiung Lotus Lake area and no-one new. We even had someone write this down in Chinese to help us. After 2 hours we gave it up and went back to the hotel very disappointed our day was wasted due to lack of information and also been given incorrect information. Take your own info in English as there is none here.
It's a lot easier to navigate that Taipei as they only have 2 MRT lines. There were some touts insisting you go to Kenting at the Zuoying High Speed Rail Station so try to avoid spending too much time within that station. Hotels are cheap. You can stay 2 nights at Kaohsiung and only 1 night at Taipei, assuming you stay 4 or 5 stars. I've been to Kaohsiung twice to catch up with my friend. I always find the city so laid back and relaxing. I really like this city. I didn't go to many places so I can't comment. There are definitely places to go so do your research.
I will be returning next year so i will spend a few nights in Kaohsiung to explore the city properly and the areas around Kaohsiung e. Have to go to sizihwan,fisherman wharf, love river, kenting beach. A seaside city with the largetst port in Taiwan. The city didn't have many skyscrapers but good sea and port view from the hill.

With the metro, one can reach the various places of interests easily. Koahsiung has so much to offer. It has all the usual city attractions like department stores, restaurants, museums etc, and also lots of options for nature enthusiast to enjoy, like the beach, the mountains and the lakes. After spending 3 nights in Taipei, I found Kaohsiung very relaxing.

Further trip to the surrounding areas and neighbour cities is recommended. Tips: - Buy yourself a one-day or two-day pass for MRT. MRT is just a few step away to major attraction. Hotel are everywhere and the price offered is affordable and a lot variety. Nice city, I love it, the people in Kaosiung are much nicer than people in the North. They love to help. A place where you can visit for the night markets! In the morning, not much stuff to do actually.
But the night markets here are really good! If taking a direct flight into Kaohsiung, best to travel by train to Tainan for a day tour. Followed by train down to the south and stay at Kenting. In Kaohsiung, the best thing to do is to visit the two nightmarket, one being the Liuhe night market and the other Ruifeng nightmarket. Cijin island is a 11km long island which serve cheap seafood.
