Great spot to experience guided backcountry skiing.
Shiga Kogen — Largest ski resort in Japan. Offers a European-style experience, as you can ski from base village to base village. Niseko — Receives the most snow in the country, typically 50 to 60 feet. Very popular among international skiers and riders, and the villages especially Grand Hirafu and accommodations reflect that.
Rusutsu — Receives 46 feet annually, making it a great option for powderhounds, too. Great tree skiing with minimal traversing and plenty of beginner zones, too. Skiing through the kitschy, summer amusement park is pretty special and makes for great photos. Kiroro — Fewer crowds than other Hokkaido resorts, but plenty of powder. Ski in ski out hotels and world-class Western options. Quiet nightlife, but variety of family experiences. Furano — Great snowfall, but less than other resorts 30 feet annually.
However, this means more sunshine. In Togakushi, there are over cedars trees that are over years old. This area plays into a number of Japanese mythical tales. This is a great day trip.
In the central Alps, Mt. Best experienced in spring through fall, you are walking in the clouds with uninterrupted views. This makes it a special stop for fall foliage.
All in all, it is about a three journey if heading out from Tokyo but the landscape would suggest you had been traveling longer. There are only a handful of hotels in the area and vehicle access is limited to bus and taxi. The best way in would be a bus from Matsumoto station a little under 2 hours. If you have some time to explore and want to get find beautiful solitude, this is a good place to seek out. A very popular spot for Japanese travelers, Karuizawa is only 70 minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen. The town is noted for its art, great food, and accessibility to nature.
Further outside Karuizawa are the Shiraito Falls.
Rent a bike and cycle the area. The best soba I have ever had was a fortuitous stop on a cycling day.
I have been back on subsequent trips and it lives up to my memory. Ask me about when we talk. The mountainous prefecture has some of the purest water sources which makes it an onsen destination as well as a top spot for sake, wine, and beer making.

The skiing is second to none with its roomy slopes and high snow fall. For those not skiing, the hikes, yoga, kayaking and mountain biking tracks, to name a few, are all at your door step. Cultural and culinary experiences are a plenty. And the majestic snow monkeys located in the Yudanaka National Park are one of the most incredible animals you will ever see in the wild.
